Xanax (alprazolam) is a prescription benzodiazepine commonly used to manage anxiety disorders, panic disorder, and acute episodes of intense stress. It works by enhancing the effects of GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces excessive brain activity, promoting calmness and reducing feelings of tension, restlessness, and rapid heartbeat. Xanax is effective when used under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider.
For adults with anxiety, typical starting dosages are 0.25 mg to 0.5 mg, taken two to three times daily, with gradual adjustments based on response and tolerance. For panic disorder, higher doses may be prescribed, sometimes up to 4 mg per day, divided into smaller doses. Xanax should always be taken exactly as prescribed to avoid drowsiness, dependence, or withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol and other sedatives should be avoided during treatment. Regular follow-ups with a healthcare provider ensure safe, effective use and proper dosage management tailored to individual needs.
