Hydrocodone is a prescription opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to severe pain and, in some formulations, to suppress cough. It works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord, which reduces the perception of pain and alters the body’s response to discomfort. Hydrocodone is commonly combined with acetaminophen or ibuprofen to enhance pain relief and is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance due to its potential for misuse and addiction.

Dosage of hydrocodone varies depending on the formulation, pain severity, and patient factors such as opioid tolerance and overall health. For pain, typical adult dosing ranges from 5–10 mg every 4–6 hours as needed, often in combination products containing 325 mg of acetaminophen. Extended-release formulations are taken once daily and must be swallowed whole. Patients should take hydrocodone exactly as prescribed and avoid exceeding recommended doses, especially to prevent acetaminophen-related liver damage when using combination products.

There are important warnings associated with hydrocodone use. It can cause respiratory depression, meaning slow or shallow breathing, which can be life-threatening—particularly at higher doses or when combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other central nervous system depressants. Long-term use can lead to physical dependence, and abrupt discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, muscle aches, nausea, and sweating. Individuals with lung disease, liver problems, or a history of substance use disorder should use hydrocodone with caution.

Common side effects of hydrocodone include drowsiness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and itching. More serious side effects may include confusion, low blood pressure, slow breathing, or fainting. Patients are advised to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how the medication affects them and to seek immediate medical attention if signs of overdose occur, such as extreme sleepiness, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness.
